Roland, Woolworth & Associates has extensive experience with historic projects. Our region is rich with history and architecture spanning centuries and we are proud to have helped bring so many of these historic buildings into the 21st century.

We believe these structures, whether restored, preserved, or adapted, are essential to maintaining a unique sense of place and culture. Historic projects present a unique set of challenges; we welcome these challenges because we understand preservation's key role in sustainability and community.

Among the typical acoustical and A/V challenges presented are:
  • Environmental noise intrusion through historic doors and windows
  • Less flexibility/space for mechanical equipment, resulting in excessive noise and vibration
  • Interior sound isolation through existing walls, floor/ceiling assemblies, and doors
(including impact noise - "creaky floors")
  • Inappropriate room acoustics in adaptive reuse, especially for performance spaces or amplification
  • Historically-appropriate aesthetics for all solutions

While traditionally, historic preservation and restoration can be dominated by aesthetic historic accuracy, we understand many projects need a fully-functioning building environment, including acoustics and audio-visual technology and can help you find that compromise.

Among our services for historic projects are:
  • Acoustical testing of existing space/environment
  • Acoustic modeling of existing/future space
  • Drawing reviews
  • Design work (including sound isolation and HVAC noise/vibration)
  • Recommendations of historically acceptable products, including vendors and pricing
  • Communication with and documentation for departments of History and Archives and historic                        committees and boards
